La montura es tanto o más importante que la óptica del telescopio. Es importante seleccionar una que sea lo suficientemente grande como para soportar el peso del telescopio con las mínimas vibraciones.
Toda montura dispone de dos ejes: las monturas acimutales mueven el telescopio en el plano vertical y en el horizontal (acimut). Las monturas ecuatoriales, por el contrario, se mueven en un eje paralelo al de la Tierra. En astrofotografía con tiempos de exposición largos es un requisito imprescindible. Con una montura fotográfica puede usar una cámara con objetivos intercambiables, ¡lo que resulta perfecto para viajar!
El término GoTo hace referencia a un control por ordenador que facilita la búsqueda de los objetos celestes.
