For many years I used the Fornax wedge and LighTrack II to photograph eclipses. Daytime alignment is always a challenge but with some apps you can achieve quite good results. In preparation of the 2026 Spain eclipse I one again came upon reviews of this product. Unfortunately (in my opinion) ads and reviews mostly refer to use with a telescope but I always use Canon cameras and lenses with EFL of 800mm. To use the above Fornax equipment on my Gitzo tripod I used my Arca-Swiss ballhead. Either way, I bought the SolarQuest Heliofind mount for use with the camera setup as it was obvious that should work too. I also had to buy the Omegon 56471 dovetail as my Arca-Swiss plate is not Vixen compatible. The Omegon does the job perfectly and is very inexpensive.
As always the order arrived on schedule. The mount is packed in some thick hard foam, which I also used to take the mount to Spain. Setup is very easy although again the instruction sheet only mentions telescopes. The instruction sheets refer to AA size batteries but these don't fit in the holder, AAA batteries do but I normally use my Tracer 12V battery. Frankly, this product works superbly and better than expected. In my experience if the bubble is fully centered the sun will be centered too. Just make sure the dovetail is properly aligned with the lens! While in Spain the tripod was fully extended and the bubble was not 100% centered but still well within the indicated limits. Trying to get perfection would be too time consuming and cumbersome. The sun was only very slightly off-center but once adjusted with the slide switch it remained in place during the whole eclipse. Needless to say I'm extremely satisfied with this product. The mount obviously also takes less space and weight than the Fornax items and the ballhead combination. That equipment could not be used to photograph eclipses from a ship (alignment!) but I'm quite confident the SolarQuest can keep tracking if the sea is calm. If somebody watching you hits the tripod, it does happen too, you don't loose a lot of time to do another setup. I certainly plan to buy a refractor to observe the sun in the future with this mount.
