In contrast to devices of the 1st or 2nd generation, digital night vision devices are based on the principle of a digital camera. Very light-sensitive sensors amplify the residual light. Some devices offer the possibility of taking photos or recording videos.

The second specification in a night vision device’s model number is the front lens diameter. The larger it is, the more light the night vision device collects.

This allows the device to be mounted onto a standard photographic tripod with a 1/4" camera screw.
