440 steel
Material information:
This steel is very popular for everyday knives due to its rust resistance. This is ensured by the high chromium content of up to 18%. This steel is also characterised by its very high hardness, approx. 56-59 Rockwell. The hardness is determined by the mixture ratio of carbon components. However, the disadvantage of most hard steels is their lack of cutting durability. With frequent use, you will need to resharpen the knife regularly.
440 steels are divided into 3 subtypes:
- 440 A: carbon content approx. 0.55%, chromium content approx. 14%, approx. 56 Rockwell
- 440 B: carbon content approx. 0.90%, chromium content approx. 18%, approx. 56 - 57 HRC Rockwell
- 440 C: carbon content approx. 1.05%, chromium content approx. 17%, approx. 58 - 59 HRC Rockwell
Information about the blade shape:
Clip point blade (
) Theclip point blade is one of the most common blade shapes. With this blade shape, the design means that approximately the front third of the blade looks as if it has been cut off. It often has a slight curve. This blade shape is primarily designed to save weight and the blade tip tends to be pointed.
