420 steel is mainly used when knife manufacturers want to keep the price-performance ratio low. The material is very corrosion-resistant, i.e. rust-free. However, this type of steel needs to be resharpened quite frequently. This is very easy to do. Of course, there are higher-quality knife steels, but this quality is usually sufficient for most applications.
