The Hassi Messaoud 001 meteorite was discovered on 11 March 2020 near the town of El Borma, Algeria. It had a mass of 75 grams and is classified as a nakhlite. Nakhlites are a group of Martian meteorites named after the first of its kind, the Nakhla meteorite. Nakhlites are eruptive rocks rich in augite that formed from basaltic magma about 1.3 billion years ago. They contain augite and olivine crystals.
Their crystallisation age, compared to crater counts in various regions of Mars, suggests that the Nakhlites originated in the Tharsis, Elysium or Syrtis Major Planum regions of Mars.
