The Muonionalusta meteorite was found in Norbotten, Sweden, in 1906. It impressively displays the Widmanstätten structures characteristic of iron meteorites. The meteorite is classified as a fine octahedrite of type IVA (Of).
The first fragment of the Muonionalusta was found in 1906 near the village of Kitkiöjärvi, west of the Swedish-Finnish border. The meteorite fell to Earth around one million years ago. The age of the rock has been determined to be 4.5653 billion years, making it one of the oldest known meteorites – a true ambassador from the time when our solar system was formed!
The total mass of the meteorites is estimated at four tonnes, but only a fraction of this is known. This is due to the size of the scatter field and its difficult location north of the Arctic Circle.
