Product description

This book offers both practical knowledge and the necessary theory for solar observation!

The sun is the star right outside our front door. The celestial body that determines our lives is a magnificent astronomical object that shows a new face every day. Even with the (protected!) naked eye, fascinating observations can be made.

This book explains the phenomena on the Sun and shows how they can be observed and photographed with modern solar telescopes. In addition to conventional "white light", this includes observation in special spectral lines of the elements hydrogen and calcium.

Particular emphasis is placed on safety during solar observation. Various filter methods are explained in detail and their suitability for different observation purposes is highlighted.

The 3rd edition has been expanded by 48 pages. New additions include the presentation of various H-alpha and calcium filter solutions and solar telescopes from numerous manufacturers. All current and older models relevant to amateurs are discussed, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Illustrations of optical designs, tips on building your own equipment, guidance on modifications and troubleshooting for equipment faults make this book an unrivalled treasure trove of knowledge for all solar observers.

The author, Jürgen Banisch, was born in Nuremberg in 1969. He has been interested in astronomy since he was seven years old. He is currently realising his dream of having his own observatory under the dark countryside sky.

The author, Oliver Smie, born in Dresden in 1980, developed an interest in astronomy as a child. He is a qualified precision optician who has undergone further training to become an industrial optician. Having worked in Jena, Berlin and again in Dresden, he has been living in france with his partner since the end of 2022.
