Our daily lives are determined by the change from day to night. Due to the rotation of the Earth, the sun travels tirelessly from east to west, constantly changing the place where our daytime star reaches its highest point at midday. The Magellan sundial shows the sun's path around our globe in a unique way.
With the Magellan sundial, you can follow the sun's path with a midday pointer, which you swing towards the sun until the shadow disappears to the left and right of the pointer. The pointer then stands exactly above the longitude at which the sun is at its highest point at that moment, where it is midday. At a point on this longitude, the sun's rays strike vertically and the sun is at its zenith. This so-called subsolar point is indicated on the midday bar: the sunlight enters narrow slits in the bar and the subsolar point and the date can then be read on the brightest segment of light.
Aligned to the geographical coordinates of the location, the globe is always illuminated like our Earth. In the eternal play of light and shadow, you can follow day and night, sunrise and sunset, day lengths, polar day and night. No other sundial offers such a wide variety of reading options.
The Magellan can be mounted directly on a suitable pedestal using its levelling base. Stainless steel, marble and granite stands are available as accessories. Includes mounting hardware, tools and detailed manual.
