With a diameter of 80 mm each, they enlarge the footprint of each tripod leg. In addition, the large rubber surfaces act almost like a brake against unintentional slipping of the tripod - especially on icy-smooth surfaces. But it also helps on snow or sand (beach) if the tripod feet are, so to speak, a few sizes larger than normal. They sink less deep there.
