Really sharp planetary images can only be achieved with an IR/UV blocking filter. The filter only allows visible light between 400 and 680 nm to pass through. This completely blocks the UV and IR light ranges.
CCD planet images: A sharp image
A CCD camera is not only sensitive to visible light, but also to other wavelengths. The planet is imaged in visible light and, for example, also in infrared. However, the image is blurred. With the IR-Cut filter, you only allow visible light to pass through. And your trump card is a sharp planet image.
Solar observation: against UV light
The UV/IR filter is also very helpful in solar observation. It filters out dangerous UV radiation, which can contribute to lens clouding of the eye. The filter is a must for a Herschel wedge, but it is also extremely useful when observing with lens solar filters (e.g. foil filters).
The advantages at a glance:
- Only allows visible light to pass through
- blocks the UV and IR range
- Particularly well suited for planetary photography
- planoptically polished and coated
- In sturdy 2" aluminium frame
