How astronomical photographs change our view of the world
We humans have known for over 400 years that we are not, as we had arrogantly believed, at the centre of the universe. Nevertheless, it came as a great surprise when the first photographs of the blue globe appeared with the dawn of space flight. Environmental activists were alarmed by the fragility of the atmosphere, philosophers distanced themselves from humanity, and landscape photographers discovered strange worlds within the world we already knew.
Bernd Pröschold has tracked down extraterrestrial-looking motifs in desert landscapes, in Earth's orbit and even in the deep sea, and compiled them into an essayistic coffee-table book in landscape format. Against a cosmic backdrop, he draws the contours of a two-legged creature whose fate is much more closely interwoven with the universe than our everyday experience would suggest. We embark on a visual journey through extraterrestrial imagery, enriched by quotations and anecdotes – a must for all nature lovers, philosophers and space enthusiasts.
