Comets are fascinating celestial spectacles. Their sudden appearance frightened earlier generations to death, but today amateur astronomers look forward to these often short-lived tailed stars.

This book explains the different forms comets take and the processes that occur as they approach the sun. It shows in detail how comets can be observed and photographed with amateur telescopes.

Well-known comets from Halley to Hale-Bopp are presented in individual descriptions. The comets C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) and C/2012 S1 (ISON) are featured separately, as both could make spectacular appearances in 2013.
