Herschel wedges, also known as Herschel prisms or sun prisms, are ideal for observing the sun in white light with refracting telescopes (refractors). Since they also deflect the light, the view is exactly as you would expect from a diagonal mirror.
Approximately 95% of the sunlight is blocked by the Herschel wedge. The rest is available to the observer or photographer. The contrast is usually significantly better than with an objective solar filter. Since the light is polarised after passing through the wedge, the intensity can be easily adjusted with a polarising filter.
This Herschel wedge comes complete with a wide range of accessories. You do not need any additional filters for observation and only a suitable camera adaptor for photography.
This Herschel wedge offers a few special features:
- A permanently integrated green filter with transmission between 510 and 550 nanometres ensures maximum contrast. Even simple, poorly colour-corrected achromatic refracting telescopes are suitable for observation.
- An adjustable aperture in front of the wedge allows you to regulate the intensity of the light entering the Herschel wedge.
- A polarisation filter and a ring with M36 thread are included in the delivery. The wedge housing has a T2 thread on the camera side for screwing on a camera. This allows the full aperture to be used.
Please note: Herschel wedges may only be used in combination with refracting telescopes (lens telescopes). Under no circumstances should they be used with Newtonian telescopes or a catadioptric system (SC, ACF, Maksutov)!
Tip: Remove the finder scope from the telescope during solar observation to prevent accidental or deliberate looking through the finder. Instead, you can mount the accessories euro EMC S 074 solar finder, upper section. With the Herschel prism, the illuminated dot on the ceramic plate serves as a solar finder.
