Dobsonian telescopes are among the most practical instruments in astronomy. They are of simple construction and yet a brilliant idea. They essentially consist of two parts: firstly the optics, which in most cases is a solid tube or truss tube design; and secondly the mount, a wooden box (also called a 'rocker box') which sits on the ground and into which the telescope is inserted. This design allows you to begin observing sessions immediately without first having to spend time setting up and aligning a complicated mount. The basic idea of the Dobsonian design came from the wish to have a big telescope at a low price, a wish that has succeeded brilliantly. A true fan base has developed since the invention of the Dobsonian telescope which is dedicated to these instruments and their fascinating simplicity and to the idea of 'high performance at low price'.
The N 406/1830 is such a large and powerful telescope that it allows for a lifetime of exploration of the night sky. The primary mirrors, with a diameter of 406 mm, also enable the observation of galaxies with low surface brightness. The high resolution makes observing the Moon, planets and even planetary nebulae a real pleasure!
Despite its size and outstanding optical performance, however, it remains easy for anyone to use. The telescope tube is mounted on a stable, portable base that is simple and intuitive to operate manually. The dual-speed focuser with adaptors allows for precise focus adjustment and the use of most standard eyepieces.
The telescope’s reliable performance is based on its high-quality parabolic primary mirror made from BK-7 glass, a material that has proven itself in professional optical instruments because it is relatively insensitive to temperature fluctuations. The primary and secondary mirrors are coated with aluminium, offering a reflectivity of 92–95%.
The truss tube design allows easy transport of this large telescope in a normal car: the entire instrument can be dismantled into a compact size in just a few easy steps and without the need of special tools.
