More about the series EQ-5...

AC 150/1200 telescope:

This refractor provides powerful optics and high resolution for detailed planetary observing. With its 150mm aperture, this achromatic refractor is one of the larger members of this type of telescope. With a focal ratio of f8, most chromatic aberration is already well corrected. Of course as a refractor it provides especially good contrast, which is highly positive for planetary observing. Planet observing in particular depends on being able to see individual details, such as the polar ice caps on Mars or the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. There is nothing standing in the way of a quick trip through the solar system! Many DSOs, such as the Ring Nebula or the distant globular cluster M13 are also easily visible. Collecting 460 times more light, it shows objects that are not even to be guessed at with the naked eye alone. This instrument has a 2" focuser and includes a 1.25" reducing adapter, allowing it to be used with both sizes of eyepiece. Using a 2" eyepiece gives you the widest field of view. So a 2" 40mm eyepiece with a 72° apparent field of view for example, will show you 2.8 degrees of sky. Extended DSOs fit well into this field of view. The 9x50 finder scope is mounted parallel to the telescope OTA and facilitates location of astronomical objects. Astrophotography can also be carried out with this telescope. The Moon, planets, and even most nebulae can be photographed with this system.

The advantages in a nutshell:

  • powerful refractor
  • adjustable objective lens cell
  • high-contrast image and reduced chromatic aberration
  • 2 inch focuser
  • well suited to astrophotography
  • prism rail for quick mounting
  • 9 x 50 finder scope

The NEQ-5 mount:

This mount is a further development of the EQ-5, in a white design. It provides a solid platform for most large telescopes and is excellent for exploring the night sky. Once you have aligned the parallactic mount on the Pole Star, you can easily sight on an object, position it in the field of view, and track it using the slow motion control knobs provided. Fine adjustment is possible in right ascension and declination. The polar elevation at the observing site can be set using the fine scale provided and adjusted perfectly by using two screws. Both a polar finder and electric motors for both axes plus a control unit can be retrofitted: the NEQ-5 is suitable not only for visual observing, but also for getting started in astrophotography. Long exposure astrophotography is also possible with the optional upgrades available, such as the motor kit or the GoTo kit. With a little practice, you will soon be able to produce successful images of galaxies and nebulae.

A great tube with an ok mount

The telescope itself is awesome, at 300x magnification looking around the moon never gets old: you can see the mountains sticking out of its surface! Admittedly chromatic aberration is a problem (Neptune was almost impossible to discern) but overall i am perfectly happy with what it is.That being said the finder scope really needs a 90 degree diagonal and the focuser is fine for light eyepieces but if you use the heavier 2" barlows and eyepieces (you payed for 2" you should use the whole 2") the diagonal has a tendency to walk: don't ever try to put a ~350 grams barlow with a ~600g eyepiece at an oblique angle, you will get a heart attack. They should have replaced the 2 screws with a compression ring. The mount is a 3/5 the moving parts and the whole structure are solid but the weights slide down far to easily unless you tighten the hell outta them, the elevation screws at maximum and minimum elevation strike against the mount making them annoying to use and the polar scope is essentially useless without the illuminator (sold separately). Also the graticule is great... for the southern sky...Anyway it is a great package, it certainly got me into the stars, it's just a shame because for a little extra money you could have a flawless experience if only they improved the quality of life just a bit.
